Google Clarifies Local Services Ads Ranking: Proximity No Longer Key

12th May 2024/in SEO/by Chris Giles

In a recent update to the Local Services Ads (LSA) help document, Google has made a significant change, shifting the focus away from the proximity of businesses to potential customers as a ranking factor. This adjustment suggests a refined strategy in how LSAs determine the most relevant service providers for user queries.

Previously, the help document explicitly listed proximity as a factor in determining how businesses ranked in Local Services Ads. This was evident in the earlier version of the document, which included proximity alongside factors like service relevance and business information in influencing ad rankings. However, the updated document omits this, indicating a strategic pivot in Google’s approach to local ad relevancy.

What Changed in the Google LSA Document?

The change was first noticed by Chris Barnard, who shared insights on social media about the updated LSA guidelines. The original document stated that factors such as “how relevant your business is for the customer’s search, services you provide, your business bio, and your proximity to potential customers’ locations” were crucial. The revised version has removed the mention of proximity, highlighting a shift towards other relevancy factors.

Google Ads Liaison Ginny Marvin clarified the update on social media, explaining that the change reflects an evolved understanding of what metrics truly matter when connecting consumers with advertisers. She noted that while proximity used to be considered a significant factor, it has become clear that the actual location of a business is less critical than whether it can serve the customer’s area effectively.

Why the Shift Away From Proximity?

The rationale behind de-emphasising proximity in Local Services Ads is based on consumer and advertiser feedback and data analysis. Google has recognised that the relevance of services offered and the ability to serve the customer’s location are more important than the physical proximity of the business itself. This is particularly pertinent in services where the business location is less tied to service quality, such as home cleaning or virtual consulting services.

Impact on Businesses Using Google LSAs

For businesses leveraging Google’s Local Services Ads, this update means re-evaluating how they optimise their ad strategies. With less emphasis on proximity, the focus should shift towards enhancing the relevance of their services and ensuring their business profiles are robust and informative. This includes accurate service descriptions, clear business bios, and information about service areas.

Google also stresses the importance of response times in the updated document. Enabling messaging and booking options, and maintaining a quick response time can significantly impact ad performance. This is especially true during off-hours or weekends, giving businesses a greater chance to capture leads when potential customers are actively searching.

Conclusion

Google’s update to the Local Services Ads help document signifies a strategic shift in how ad relevancy is determined, moving away from proximity and focusing more on service relevance and area coverage. This change encourages businesses to enhance their service offerings and responsiveness in their LSAs to improve their visibility and effectiveness in reaching potential customers.

As the digital advertising landscape continues to evolve, staying updated with these changes and adapting strategies accordingly will be key for businesses aiming to maximise their impact through Google’s Local Services Ads.
