Mobile-First

Google’s New Mobile-First Indexing Policy

3rd June 2024/in Web Design/by Chris Giles

Google has announced that starting 5th July 2024, it will no longer index websites that do not work on mobile devices. This means if your website can’t be accessed on a phone or tablet, it won’t show up in Google search results. This change is part of Google’s plan to make the internet more mobile-friendly. For business owners and digital marketers, this means making sure your website works well on mobile devices is more important than ever.

The Shift to Mobile-First Indexing

A Long Time Coming

Google’s mobile-first indexing initiative started just over seven and a half years ago. This was because more and more people were using their phones to browse the internet. John Mueller from Google said that most of the web is already being crawled using mobile-first indexing. But now, Google is making it official: if a website doesn’t render or load on a mobile device, it won’t be indexed by Google.

What This Means for Your Website

If your website doesn’t render or load on mobile devices at all, it won’t be indexed by Google. This means it won’t show up in search results. It’s not just about having a mobile-friendly site; it’s about making sure your site works on mobile devices. If you have a desktop template only, it is fine, assuming the desktop version loads on a mobile device.

Ensuring Mobile Accessibility

Testing Your Site

To comply with Google’s new policy, you need to test your website’s mobile accessibility. Use the Google Search Console URL Inspection tool to ensure your site is accessible on mobile devices and to identify any issues.

Practical Steps to Take

  1. Responsive Design: Make sure your website uses a design that adapts to different screen sizes.

  2. Mobile-Friendly Content: Optimise your content for mobile users by using shorter paragraphs, larger fonts, and easy-to-use navigation.

  3. Loading Speed: Improve your site’s loading speed on mobile devices by compressing images, using browser caching, and minimising JavaScript.

  4. Testing Tools: Regularly use tools like Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test and PageSpeed Insights to check and improve your site’s mobile performance.

Why This Matters

Impact on SEO

For most businesses, this change may not be a big issue because many websites are already optimised for mobile. But for those who haven’t made the switch, the consequences could be severe. If a site doesn’t work on mobile devices, it won’t be crawled or indexed by Google, leading to a drop in search rankings and visibility.

Client Considerations

For digital marketers and SEO professionals, this policy change is important when working with clients. If a client’s site doesn’t load on mobile devices, it needs to be fixed quickly. Ensuring mobile accessibility will help maintain search rankings and improve the user experience.

The Future of Desktop Crawling

Limited Use of Googlebot Desktop

While the focus is on mobile-first indexing, Google will still sometimes use the Googlebot Desktop crawler for product listings and Google for Jobs. So, you may still see Googlebot Desktop in your server logs and reporting tools, but it will be used less than Googlebot Smartphone.

Conclusion

Google’s new mobile-first indexing policy is a big step towards a more mobile-friendly internet. For business owners and digital marketers, this change highlights the importance of making sure websites work well on mobile devices. By testing and optimising your site for mobile users, you can maintain your search engine rankings and provide a better experience for your audience.

In summary, the key takeaways are:

  • Google will no longer index sites that do not work on mobile devices starting 5th July 2024.

  • Make sure your site is mobile-friendly by using responsive design, optimising content, and improving loading speed.

  • Use tools like Google Search Console URL Inspection to test your site’s mobile accessibility.

  • Understand that while Googlebot Desktop will still be used in some cases, the main focus is on mobile-first indexing.

By staying informed and proactive, you can navigate this change smoothly and continue to succeed in the digital world.
